Mariam al-Shami is a seasoned attorney with a Bachelor of Laws from the Lebanese University, practicing as an appeal attorney since 1994 and serving as an attorney for the Lebanese state since 2013. She is actively involved in the Liberties and Women’s Committees of the Beirut Bar Association and was elected Vice-President of the Arab Organization of Young Lawyers in 2014. Affiliated with the Amal movement from childhood, Mariam has held various roles, including scout leader, district official, and chief of lawyers. She became the first woman elected to the Political Bureau of the Amal movement in 2001 and currently serves on its advisory board. She is trained in political and electoral work, advocating for women’s political participation and the establishment of a Ministry for Women’s Affairs since 2008. Mariam has contributed to multiple legislative efforts, including the Law on the Protection of Women and Other Family Members from Violence. She has worked to increase women’s representation in political decision-making within her party, improving the political role of women and advocating for their involvement in the presidency of the Amal movement. She actively builds cooperation between the Amal movement and civil society organizations, representing her party at numerous local and international conferences.
